What an amazing few weeks it has been for the Summerlin campus as we officially launched GENESIS, an important milestone in the development of the College of Medicine. In the coming weeks, our community outreach workers will begin visiting households in underserved areas of Las Vegas and connecting them with critical medical and social services.
You can read more about GENESIS and the launch event that took place on March 30 at Las Vegas City Hall as well as my interview with CBS News in this issue of spectRUm. However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire College of Medicine team for their hard work and dedication in creating GENESIS, especially Dr. Luther Brewster, Sheyla Pierre, Daenna Dolce, and Vicky VanMeetren. Each of these individuals bring to the College of Medicine unique talents, perspectives and ideas that helped launch GENESIS. I am immensely proud of this team. I would like to also thank Las Vegas City Councilman Cedric Crear for his support in the development of GENESIS. He understands and appreciates what GENESIS will do to help many underserved households in Las Vegas achieve resiliency.
On April 30, the College of Medicine’s ASPIRE program will hold its third “A Rose Grows in the Desert” event at the Futuro Academy in Las Vegas. Designed for middle and high school students interested in science, the event offers participants the opportunity to explore many areas of science, technology, engineering arts and math (STEAM) through presentations and hands-on activities. It takes many hours of work by Dr. Cheryl Brewster, Marsha Stevens, the rest of our College of Medicine team, and many community partners to make this event happen. Based on the success of the first event last November, I look forward to seeing many more Las Vegas youth benefit from learning opportunities on Saturday.
Finally, I would like to close by thanking everyone in the southern Nevada community for their support of the College of Medicine, especially Roseman University of Health Sciences Board of Trustees members David Dunn and Rick Smith. They co-authored an article in this month’s issue of Nevada Business Magazine sharing how the College of Medicine will benefit Nevada in the expansion of medical care, and also economically. These two gentlemen are unwavering supporters of the College of Medicine, and we appreciate their leadership and advocacy.
If you or anyone has any questions about the College of Medicine, GENESIS, or ASPIRE, I invite you to reach out and learn more.
Best wishes,
Dr. Pedro “Joe” Greer, Jr.
Dean, College of Medicine
