Definition

Faculty whose main function is to teach students and, when modified by “research,” conduct research.

Adjunct

Faculty who hold a primary appointment at another university or at a different college at RUHS

Dual Appointment

Faculty with appointments across two departments within RUCOM.

Emeritus

An honorary appointment granted by the university president in recognition of years of service to the institution.

Visiting

Professionals who contribute to the academic and/or research endeavors of the college. Responsibilities are per contractual agreement.

 

Faculty Ranks

Rank Criteria
Instructor
  • Does not possess the terminal degree in their discipline, and/or has yet to complete the requisite post-graduate training which is generally commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor in their field.
  • Automatically eligible for promotion from Instructor to Assistant Professor upon successful completion of the aforementioned training/degree programs.
Assistant Professor
  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree in their field of specialization, and or the requisite post-graduate training which is generally commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor in their field.
  • Strong local reputation.
Associate Professor
  • Sustained high quality record of scholarship, teaching, and service, with a greater emphasis on teaching.
  • Strong regional and emerging national reputation.
  • Faculty usually spend a minimum of four years at the rank of assistant professor before they are eligible for promotion to associate professor.
  • Faculty must spend a minimum of 2 years of employment or appointment at Roseman University before they are eligible to apply for promotion to associate professor at RUCOM.
Professor
  • Continuous high quality record of scholarship, teaching, and service, with a greater emphasis on teaching.
  • Sustained national and in some cases international reputation.
  • Faculty usually spend a minimum of four years at the rank of associate professor before they are eligible for promotion to full professor.
Individuals failing to meet the aforementioned minimum criteria may still be awarded advancement in rank at the discretion of the dean/program director.

RUCOM Full- & Part-Time Definitions

Regular & Clinical Practice Faculty

Full-time:

Regular and clinical practice faculty employed by RUCOM with an effort of 0.8 FTE or greater are considered full-time.

Part-time:

Regular & clinical practice faculty employed by RUCOM with an effort of less than 0.8 FTE are considered part-time.

Clinical (Community-Based) Faculty

Full-time:

Clinical (community based) faculty who work full time at a hospital or health system that RUCOM has an active affiliation agreement with.

Part-time:

Clinical (community based) faculty who work for a medical practice, hospital, or health system that RUCOM does not have an active affiliation agreement with.

Faculty Annual Review

Annual Review Culture & Philosophy: Reviews shall be developmental in nature and toward advancement to prepare faculty for the promotion and five-year contract process, improve the education of RUCOM students, improve clinical operations, and meet the mission of the college.

2024 Annual Review Process & Timeline

The Roseman University of Health Sciences Faculty Handbook requires all faculty members to be evaluated in writing at least once annually. At Roseman University College of Medicine, all full-time academic faculty  members are reviewed for the calendar year (Jan 1 through Dec 31) during the first three months of the following year.
