Roseman’s educational and clinical model, centered around teamwork and collaboration, provides a big dose of ongoing inspiration

“I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a culture that values compassion, collaboration, and continuous growth, both in the classroom and beyond.”

Rachel Tomco Novak, PhD, MS
College of Dental Medicine
Associate Dean, Enrollment & Student Success

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to teach anatomy to over 15,000 students, and each time I explain the cranial nerves, heart, or brain, I am struck by the beauty of the human body. What truly enriches my experience is witnessing those transformative moments when students engage with the material and their faces light up with understanding. Each new group brings fresh perspectives and renewed enthusiasm, allowing me to relive this excitement repeatedly. I feel fortunate to inspire others to appreciate the complexity and beauty of the human body. Teaching is a continual journey of discovery and connection that I deeply cherish.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve taught at several universities, each enriching my journey as an educator. I’ve always sought environments that foster collaboration, respect, and personal growth for students and faculty alike. One of the reasons I was drawn to Roseman University’s College of Dental Medicine is its Lifelong Colleague Philosophy, which deeply aligns with my own beliefs about education and community. This philosophy emphasizes kindness, respect, and collaboration, creating a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to strive for excellence. By nurturing mutual support, we empower individuals to become the best versions of themselves, enhancing both academic achievement and personal development. I am grateful to contribute to this positive and transformative culture at Roseman. Roseman’s educational and clinical model, centered around teamwork and collaboration, is inspiring. In such an environment, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence are essential. I’ve seen colleagues readily assist each other and celebrate one another’s achievements. This culture fosters strong relationships and creates a sense of psychological safety, where individuals feel valued and supported.

As an Associate Dean, one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is celebrating key milestones in our students’ journeys. The White Coat Ceremony marks the beginning of their professional lives, filled with hope and commitment, while the Senior Awards Banquet and Hooding Ceremony honor our graduates as they take on the title of Doctor. Witnessing their transformation and dedication as they prepare to promote health and relieve suffering brings me great joy. These ceremonies not only represent years of hard work and perseverance but also reaffirm our mission to nurture compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals. It is a privilege to be part of these pivotal moments in our students’ lives.

When I’m not at work, I love spending time outdoors with my husband, two daughters, and family and friends. We enjoy hiking, kayaking, and sitting around campfires, finding joy in the beauty of nature. These moments of connection with my loved ones are as rejuvenating as the experiences I have in the classroom, and they allow me to return to my work with fresh energy and enthusiasm.

In my 12 years at Roseman, I’ve learned that the journey of teaching is as transformative for me as it is for my students. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a culture that values compassion, collaboration, and continuous growth, both in the classroom and beyond.
