Hero Scholar: Zara Maissian

In 2018, Zara was introduced to Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Organization, which provides emotional support, quality of life programs, and financial assistance for children and their families affected by childhood cancer. Her passion for caring for others led her to help form and lead Creative Expressions, an initiative where she guided diagnosed children and their siblings in various art therapy activities like painting, pottery, and woodwork. Over five years, she witnessed the resilience of these children, with a particularly memorable moment being the joy of a young girl proudly showing her butterfly drawing. This child’s beaming smile, despite undergoing chemotherapy, continues to inspire Zara’s dedication to volunteerism and community impact.

During her undergraduate studies at UNLV, Zara furthered her commitment to healthcare by obtaining her medical assistant certification. Working as a dermatology medical assistant for three years, she honed her teamwork skills and learned to thrive in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining professionalism. Her dedication to patient care was evident when a patient expressed gratitude for Zara’s compassionate bedside manner and thorough explanations.

In addition to her healthcare experience, Zara served as Director of Philanthropy for Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She participated in and hosted numerous service events, including cooking dinners for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) families, selling roses on Valentine’s Day, organizing charity carnivals, and more. Her efforts raised over $20,000 for RMHC in 2022, spreading awareness and making a significant difference in the community.

Zara is poised to make a significant impact in pharmacy, driven by her passion for helping others and her belief in the power of community support.
