College of Pharmacy to Present We Pledge: For A Drug-Free Southern Nevada

December 12, 2011

In Spring 2012, Roseman University College of Pharmacy Drug Abuse Awareness Team (DAAT) members will bring together Southern Nevada parents, middle school students and educators, along with local and national celebrities, for We Pledge: For A Drug-Free Southern Nevada. The event is designed to promote awareness of the dangers of illicit and presentation and over-the-counter drug misuse and abuse.

According to DAAT, the National Institute of Drug Abuse has reported that illicit drug use, cigarette smoking, alcohol and stimulant use has decreased, while marijuana use has leveled off. However, there has been an alarming increase in the use of prescription drugs for non-medical use. In 2010, 10.19% of 12 to 17 year olds reported using a prescription drug for non-medical use.

We Pledge: For A Drug-Free Southern Nevada will take place at the University’s Henderson, NV campus for 8th graders prior to their matriculation into 9th grade. The focus of the event is to raise awareness of growing teen drug trends, enhance the communication between parents and students, and end in a pledge by students to their parents/guardians to remain drug and alcohol free.

DAAT is currently seeking sponsorship and support for this event. For information, please contact Paul Oesterman at 702-968-2089.
