Student nurses from the College of Nursing Class of 2012 (B) from the Henderson, Nev. campus participated in the Ninth Annual Veterans Stand Down on Wednesday in Las Vegas. The Veterans Stand Down is an event that is held in cities throughout the country and is designed to help homeless veterans within various communities.
According to the last homeless census for Southern Nevada, there were 1,350 veterans who were considered homeless. In order to address this problem, the Veterans Stand Down involves the community in planning this event. There were more than 100 service providers at this year’s Stand Down and the event was totally funded by community donations.
The student nurses helped with clothing and food distribution, preparing and serving breakfast and lunch, escorting veterans to various services, helping with arts and crafts projects for children in attendance, and handing out hygiene kits and supplies. It was estimated that more than 500 veterans were served by the event.
